I got Sea of Ghosts as a present for my father, and it was returned to me to read as part of our periodic sharing of fantasy books, along with the sequel. It's one of those situations where I feel that the worldbuilding is great -- we have a complex and original setting, blending futuristic elements with a guns-and-dragons aesthetic -- but the story is lacking. Much like the Malazan books, I find it hard to care very much for the characters, and as such I don't feel terribly inclined to seek out the rest of the story. There's no particular slight on the writing style or choice of elements, but I'm lacking the gripping quality that would propel me to read on.
