Cat's Cradle

by Kurt Vonnegut

Rating: ★★★

Hard to pinpoint what didn't work for me here. I think it was that, unlike his previous novels, there wasn't a singular driving moral being discussed. There were lots of elements I liked: the irreverent tone, the concept of ice-nine, the honestly-bankrupt religion, etc. But the plot meanders without ever wrapping up all of its travel in a satisfying way, and the comedy prevents you treating it seriously as any kind of analysis of an Armageddon. You have to treat it like a farce, then, but the humour is just not outrageous enough to carry it off.

Speedily digestible, and written well enough not to be offensive or dull, but not something I would suggest as an introduction to Vonnegut.
